Ruger Vaquero 45 Colt – Review

Ruger Vaquero .45 Colt

The Ruger Vaquero combines the original Old West single-action look and feel with mew features. The mid-size steel frame and cylinder are scaled-down to the same size as the original 1955 Ruger Blackhawk®, closely resembling the classic single-action revolvers of the late 1800’s.

I have a soft spot for old action revolvers.  Aside from the heavy, black block, I grew up with “cowboy” guns.  Introduced to Cowboy Fast Draw a few years back, my desire to own a matching pair lingers.  Alas, I have yet purchased anything.

Should I decide to buy a set, I looked at the Mew Model Ruger Vaquero, chambered in .45 Colt with a 5.5″ barrel, as one of my potential options.  With a deep blued finish, round top frame, rounded blade front sight,  and traditional grip, it that takes you back when the Cartwright family was still running the Ponderosa Ranch.

The black grips are checkered and I noticed the hammer spur is flared out more; almost like a compromise between a Blackhawk and Bisley.  It also comes with a transfer bar safety so a full cylinder may be loaded.  An internal safety lock is also incorporated, which I hadn’t noticed until I read the instructions.

Despite not providing four audible clicks, this Ruger replicates the XR3 frame well.  The quality of the work is definitely an improvement from my impression of the Ruger Single Six.

After shooting 50 rounds Lucky Gunner kindly provided me for this review, plus an additional 100, I was relatively pleased with the experience.  Can’t write anything negative about it other than the pressure limitations.  I don’t necessarily mind.

Quick Cal also gives the Ruger high marks for quality and consistency, perfect for Single Action Shooting Society type events!

I eventually sent the Vaquero back to Ruger.  Though I don’t have any complaints about the Ruger, I’m going to hold out for the US Firearms’ Rodeo before I put down any cash.

That’s a neat gun and the only Ruger that really interests me, but the USFA gun is a bit more interesting – and surprisingly not much more expensive.
