New Shooter Then, Gun Owner Now

Giving the Buckmark a workout.

Almost two years ago, I took Richard, a new shooter, to the range.  Like the others I’ve taken in the past who never touched a firearm, he enjoyed it very much.

Being the enthusiast that I am, I encouraged Richard to purchase a gun since.  I kept teasing him that he should at least buy one gun before our President was elected in 2009; however, the decision to buy a firearm was ultimately vetoed by his significant other.

That was a negative on a firearm.  Or so I thought.

Richard picked my brain every now and then (what caliber, manufacture, etc.), but never acted on any of that information until a random trip to Big 5 Sporting Goods to check out shotguns for a self-defense firearm .  He looked at the Mossberg 500 and Remington 870, but wasn’t felling it.

Richard asked, “Where do they sell pistols?”

I wasn’t sure where he was going with this, but I wasn’t about to assume anything.  At the LGS, Richard looked at several rimfire pistols while I pursued the reloading section.  The last time I checked on him, he was looking at a Browning Buckmark Practical.  Ten minutes later, Richard was taking the Handgun Safety Certificate test!

For standard plinking fun, he bought his first pistol.  He also became my first new shooter to follow through with ownership.  I’m quite happy with this outcome and I certainly look forward to see to it that more new shooters I encounter follow suit.
