New Shooter AAR

My brother and his other half came in for the weekend several weeks ago. I had time to take them shooting, so we went to the Sacramento Valley Shooting Center. My brother has been on a few trips, but this was Rosey’s first. Here’s her summary.

I recently went shooting for the first time in my life, and I always thought of “firearms” and “guns” for self-defense or violence. I grew up with guns being something similar to taboo as my neighborhood was particularly bad because I would hear gunfire everyday from gang violence. So, initially I had a really bad image of guns and people with guns because of my upbringing.

But I’ve changed my mind about firearms after going shooting. My experience was really enjoyable. With proper guidance along with an experience shooter, I felt like I was in good hands. I was given 5 rules, which really just reflected common sense and everything felt safe including the environment. Honestly, I can’t remember the rules, but I do know that if I have a gun in hands, then I know that my fingers should be in safety mode, I should always be aware of my target, and I should never point the gun at anything unless I have the intention of shooting it (or at least away from people).

I still don’t think well of people who shoot irresponsibly such as Dick Cheney who “accidentally” shot someone’s face (and that someone APOLOGIZED to Dick for causing him an inconvenience as the press was all over it).

I may not owe a gun anytime soon, but my perspective about guns has definitely changed and I can understand why people enjoy shooting as a pastime.

What was the fifth rule y’all taught her?

      I don’t know. I remember only telling her four…

      Maybe I said, “Have fun!”

I, too, own a Ruger 10/22, which I bought in August.. Have fired a total of nearly 60 rounds–a lot more than my shotgun shells total of fired rounds. 🙂 My next project is to clean the Ruger.
It’s cool that your bro and sister-in-law go shooting.
