Alan Gura at Santa Clara University

Rather than hopelessly look for a parking spot, DirtCrashr generously offered free parking close to his location.  After David of RNS rendezvous at our location, we boarded the CalTrain to University of Santa Clara.  Luckily, we showed up early and had the chance to have Mr. Gura sign our memorabilia while we giggled between our ears.

For those who do not know who Mr. Gura is, he argued and won the landmark case District of Columbia v. Heller before the SCOTUS last year.  The decision held that Washington D.C.’s handgun ban was unconstitutional and guaranteed the Second Amendment right of individuals, as opposed to collectivist, to bear arms.

DirtCrashr out best David and me with his autographed HellerKitty shirt – very cool idea.  Nonetheless, I’m just as giddy with an Alan Gura signed opinion of the court.

From what I overheard, the Federalist Society of Santa Clara University were surprised and elated about the turn out this event attracted.  Don Kilmer, who argued Nordyke vs. King County, was present and several Calgun members.  Of course, law students were present as well.

I have segmented footage of his lecture, but it will be awhile before they become “live.”  Nonetheless, Mr. Gura discussed three aspects of Washington D.C. vs. Heller to look after:

– Incorporation

– Litigation opportunities after Heller.

– Possible regulations beyond the individual right to bear arms

Special thanks to the Federalist Society and Civil Society Institue of Santa Clara University.  For a “casual event,” I thought it went very well.  Pizza and refreshments were avaiable and the event started on time.  I will look forward future events they sponsor regarding the Second Amendment.

I don’t know if a used t-shirt could best a substantive document, I just didn’t have anything else – and I hope with enough effort we can get Alan to GBR IV!
I have to update my post to reflect thanks to the SCU Federalist Society, and the other guys.
