The Gun Room in bed with the hoplophobes…

The owners of The Gun Room located off of Survey Road in Elk Grove, CA recently changed their policies regarding the admittance of certain rifles inside their facility.

The employees of The Gun Room related the following in summary to me:

The policy regarding the use of legal assault-like rifles is that they are no longer permitted on the range.  If you have a .22LR black rifle variation, you may no longer shoot it here.  If you have a centerfire rifle shooting pistol cartridges, you may no longer shoot them here.  Even if you show proof of assault weapon registration, you may not shoot them here.

It is unfortunate that this policy is in place.  Many of us feel that this is unreasonable and waiting to hear from the owners to reverse their decision.  The owners feel that weapons resembling assault rifles disturbs the “family” environment and scares customers.  It is not our reasoning.  We have observed families they are attempting to attract are actually bringing in the rifles they have banned.  For now, you may not bring any firearm to The Gun Room that resembles an assault rifle, regardless if you own it legally.

Pretty sick, huh? Their approach is no different from California’s law against assault weapons. It’s based on an unreasonable fear of metal and plastic parts that are molded and configured in a particular way. I should paint my rifle pink and put sparkles on it. Maybe it’ll be family oriented enough?

I was also told that they’re making you fill out personal information (full name, address, etc) to buy gift cards at The Gun Room. Can any of you think of any reasonable justification for them to ask for such information?

Just to be clear, the employees at The Gun Room were very sympathetic. This decision is a reflection of the owners at The Gun Room, not the employees.

The indoor range near me has a rule against “Assault Weapons”, but it’s because they’ve had too many people come in and shoot the place up. If you leave the magazines at the desk, they’ll let you take it in because you have to run it in single shot mode.

Of course, their justification is just plain wrong, but it’s their right.

I think they’re covering for a fear of DOJ liability issues, and who did their website?? But the only other indoor ranges I’m familiar with don’t allow any rifles besides .22LR – they’re pretty much only pistol ranges since the distance is so short.
IMO to tell what you’re doing when you’re shooting rifles you need to begin with 100-yards. 🙂

“Centerfire rifle firing pistol cartridges” would prohibit my brother’s lever-action Marlin in .357 Magnum, too. Idiots.

I suppose I should make it clear that it too must be a black rifle/assault weapon of some sort (black, pistol grip, etc). I think they’re more concerned about the characteristics of the rifle. I’m curious about their position on tacticool 10/22’s since DirCrashr’s argument might hold some weight if it is, indeed, a black rifle/OLL issue.
