As I noted in my review for the Springfield Armory TRP, I disliked the full length guide rod. It was useless and I’ve read enough opinions to not use it anymore. I went ahead to replace it with a standard recoil spring plug and rod from Ed Brown. Really simple. I haven’t noticed any difference in the operation of the pistol; however, field stripping is much easier so I may scrub the feed ramp after several hundred rounds.

I also ran across a modification that actually reduces the perceived recoil of the 1911. It’s a simple modification of an over sized firing pin stop. It’s only $20 shipped from www.brownells.com. Check out the details here. I made the modification myself on the SA TRP and works well. To me, it wasn’t as fantastic as most people had claimed; however, I did notice a difference.
